This popular tropical fruit is indigenous to South America and was introduced to Europe when Christopher Columbus brought some back to Spain.  Then Spanish explorers introduced the Pineapple to Hawaii and the Philippines in the 1500's.  In the early 1900's, Dole's Pineapple Company and Maui Pineapple Company grew into major operations with the increasing popularity of Pineapples.  By 2009, Dole Pineapple Company moved to Costa Rica to expand production and Maui Pineapple Company reduced their operations to local supply only.  Raw, grilled, crushed or juiced, pineapples are seen in dishes from desserts and sweets to pizza and burger toppings.  Dehydrated pineapple, chewy and loaded with natural sugars and vitamins, is one of the healthier ways to tame a sweet tooth and is a great source for a quick burst of energy.
