There is evidence of pears being used for food dating back to prehistoric times. Pears grow best in cool temperate climates, making foothills, mountain chains and some coastal regions ideal for production. Many varieties are not pear shaped and look similar to apples but the skin of the pear contains Stone Cells making it gritty. Pears are a very seasonal crop but by drying them we can enjoy their sweet flavors all year round.
