In the 1980's, orange trees were the most cultivated fruit tree in the world.  They are widely grown in tropical and subtropical climates with production being highest in Brazil and in Florida and California.  Oranges are eaten fresh and squeezed into Orange Juice but there are also many uses for its fragrant peel.  Orange Peel has a thick bitter rind but the outer most layer has a strong flavor and is a good source of pectin and Vitamin C.  When the peel is crystallized it is used for flavoring or as a garnish for cakes, muffins and chocolate coating.
