Due to their long history of cultivation, it's difficult to pin-point their origin but it is believed to have originated from land around Iraq and are widely produced in tropical regions worldwide.  Dates are eaten plain, stuffed with nuts and cheeses or chopped for culinary use in a variety of sweet and savory dishes.  Dates have significant symbolic meaning in many Mediterranean cultures.  Dates were first brought to California by Spanish explorers.
